How to Keep Hair Healthy in Winter

Frizzy, dry, and splitting… does this sound like your hair right now since winter has arrived? During this season the outside temperatures drop, the wind gains speed, and the snowflakes fall upon us. Unfortunately, these changes majorly affect our daily hair routine and don’t make it easy to keep hair healthy and looking it’s best. If you want your hair glossy, soft, and smooth, you need to follow these tips to keep hair healthy in winter:

Tip #1: Get a hair trim

Hair grows best when there are no split ends making their way up the hair shaft, which destroys the good hair closest to the scalp. Take a trip to your favorite hair salon and ask for a 1-inch trim. This will be enough to get rid of split ends and give your hair a healthy fresh start for the winter.

Tip #2: Indulge in a deep conditioning mask

When your hair doesn’t get enough moisture, you are more prone to hair issues such as flyaways, frizz, and split ends. Hair masks give your hair the right amount of deep moisture to tame and prevent these issues. Try this hair mask to instantly add shine, moisture, and tame frizz: mix ¼ cup olive oil with 2 eggs and whisk in a bowl. If your hair is longer, add more olive oil in ¼ cup measurements to ensure all hair is covered. Add a shower cap (it traps the heat, maximizing the power of the ingredients) and let sit for 30-60 minutes. Rinse, shampoo, and you will instantly feel the difference. To keep your hair healthy in winter, repeat this mask weekly throughout the season.

Tip #3: Add cream to your daily routine

Styling creams are best used on wet hair.  Apply 2 quarter sized dollops, starting at the ends and working up to the mid-roots. As your hair dries, it will dry smoother because of the added moisture. Try massaging the cream into the ends and tie hair in a topknot. Some TLC will do your hair good while you look good! This simple trick will keep you hair healthy without extra trips to your hair salon.

Tip #4: Take the right vitamins

The best vitamins for your hair are B-complex vitamins, such as biotin. These vitamins thicken your hair and strengthen it from the inside, producing hair that grows better and splits less. Biotin also helps nails grow strong, which is an added bonus. To make sure that the vitamins are actually working and you  hair is getting healthy, always consult your doctor for high quality brands of supplements.

 Tip #5: Embrace the cold

In the shower, rinse your hair with a cold water for a few seconds. This will wake you up and add major shine and glossiness to your tresses. When using a hair dryer, alternate between warm and cool air. Keep in mind that hot temperatures dry out your hair, so try to reduce the heat on your hair to keep it healthy this winter.
