“Happiness is a choice. You can choose to be happy. There’s going to be stress in life, but it’s your choice whether you let it affect you or not.” – Valerie Bertinelli
Isn’t it a motivating quote, something to think about? It certainly is!
Some people believe that in order to be happy you just have to born like that. Certainly, genes have a big impact on our personality. However, the truth is that happiness is not usually happening by magic. It’s something that we can cultivate by learning right behavior and attitude that leads to a happier life. Moreover we can learn from each other how to be happy! So since the happiness is a choice, let’s see what happy people choose to do differently to stay happy.
1. Happy People Are Positive
They don’t live in the past; instead they enjoy the present and are optimistic for future. Happy people never give up. But consider any failure as a part of learning process. Keep in mind this motivational quote by Thomas A. Edison
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Try this: Learn to control your thoughts. Once something negative pops up in your mind cut it off immediately. Change your inner dialogue (thought you have in your mind). Bear only encouraging and positive dialogue in your mind.
2. Happy People Are Grateful
With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. Harvard research shows that “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”
Try this: Not only in person, but even in your mind thank someone who has done something good for you. Pray with thankfulness. Often think about your blessings in life. Cultivate grace for every simple thing, – nice weather, fresh air…
3. Happy People Are Active – they take initiative!
Happy people always stay active. They take initiative to do something good or get acquainted with new neighbors or colleagues. That’s why they usually have a lot of good friends and are very welcomed.
Try this: Is there anyone new in your work place? Why not to take an initiative to greet him and offer help with getting know new staff? Or why not to take an initiative and organize exciting activity with friends?! Don’t wait for a moment, instead create it yourself!
4. Happy People Regularly Exercise
When you exercise, your body stimulates release of chemicals (endorphins) that boost your sense of happiness and suppress hormones that cause stress and anxiety.
Try this: Choose an exercise routine that you feel comfortable with and follow it regularly.
5. Happy People Never Stop Learning
Learning new things it’s like starting a new journey of adventure. People who never stop learning usually have a lot of excitement in their lives. Since they are open minded they often discover new interesting things. They often start new hobbies and spend their money on various experiences which have a lasting effect.
Try this: Think about a new hobby you can start. Or a new thing you want to learn. And be determined to go out of your comfort zone and try something new!
